The Territory

Over the centuries, the iron processing culture and technology has seen significant development in the Lecco area. The presence of iron in the Valsassina mines – then replaced by steel factory scrap from the 1800s – together with the vast availability of hydraulic power supplied by the various torrents that flow through the urban areas of the Valley, led to the birth and growth of a successful steel wire processing industry, which started centuries ago, and was distributed in an organised manner through a fabric of artisan and family businesses which referred to just a few large enterprises. In the 1900s this set-up evolved into a more district-based system, with the consolidation of a mechanical industry focused on supplying plant systems and accessories dedicated to the metallurgy sector.
